Full course description
The AHA’s Basic Life Support (BLS) Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to renew CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings. The AHA’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies and builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR and reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
The ACLS and BLS combined Renewal course is a two part course offers the experienced healthcare provider the opportunity to renew BLS skills during the ACLS Renewal course. Participants will complete the BLS for Healthcare Providers course written exam and skills testing as a component of the ACLS Renewal.
What does this course teach?
- Basic life support skills for adults, infants, and children, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED
- Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
- Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
- Airway management
- Related pharmacology
- Management of ACS and stroke
- Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
All ACLS registrants must review the items located in the Canvas 'Modules' tab (Algorithms, Checklists and Supplementary Materials). Participants must score a minimum of 70% on the AHA's pre-course self-assessment to attend the Emory in-person course. Students will need to create an account and can take the pre-course assessment as many times as they choose. Students must bring PROOF of passing the pre-course assessment to the Emory in-person course.
